1960s Design: Stelton Tableware: The ‘Cylinda-Line’ Coffee Pot

h75101ajcoffee273x275.jpgIn the 1960s, stainless-steel tableware was particularly in vogue. The Scandinavians did much to exploit the potential of stainless-steel, and A.S.Stelton were fortunate to team- up with Arne Jacobsen (b.1902,d.1971) who created an award-winning range of tableware between 1964 and 1967, called the “Cylinda -Line”.

The “Cylinda-Line” coffee pot from the range (illustrated above) has the circles, cylindrical and right-angles favoured by Jacobsen in his designs, giving them an architectural quality. This was not surprising as the Danish designer was also a successful architect. For me, Jacobsen’s designs, apart from their appealing lines, also look as though they are fit for purpose – that when you pick the coffee-pot up by its elegant handle you are unlikely to spill most of your coffee onto the table instead of into the cup as you pour, a frequent mishap at the time when using many other tableware products at the cheaper end of the market. If you would like to learn more about this product (price £210) and others in the range click here for the CooksParaphernalia website
