The House that the Danes built:A study in Excellence

Described in The Sunday Times as :”Probably the best modern house in the world “, the above pictured 1960s house, situated in Harpenden,Hertfordshire, is for sale for £2.5m. through The Modern House.
So, apart from the fact that this is a fabulous looking house built by two eminent Danes, Povl Ahm ( civil engineer) and Jorn Utzon (architect),for Ahm, who later in his career rose to become Chairman of the Arup organisation, what else caught my eye. The furniture is still very much of the period, and it has some of the best work of contemporary Danish designers like Arne Jacobsen ,whose attractive and functional tableware is featured in the previous post. One iconic design in evidence in the Ahm’s house (no pun intended) is the Jacobsen Egg chair which I shall cover in my next post.
In addition to creating this wonderful modern house ,what else did Ahm and Utzon do in their careers? Well, how about The Sydney Opera House for starters, and much ,much more.Jacobsen , as has been said, was also an architect, and one of his projects, which Ahm was also involved on was St. Catherine’s College,Oxford.
Let’s just hope that whoever has the good fortune to buy this property will keep the whole ‘time capsule’ intact and unspoilt.Do take another look at The Modern House website for further details.
