Mid-Century Design Glass Topped Modern Coffee Table

In 1947, Isamu Noguchi designed his now famous glass-topped coffee table with wooden plinth-like base. As a renowned 20th century artist, particularly as a sculptor, he produced work over six decades and across many creative categories including ceramics, lighting and furniture.

These elegant tables may seem to sell at an eye-watering price but they are beautifully made from either of black ash or walnut for the solid two-piece base which supports the glass top which carries Noguchi’s signature etched into it. Of the two, the walnut is the more expensive choice of the two. This is a mid-century modern design classic at its very best. Originals of the 1947 (IN-50 models) by Herman Miller have long become serious collectors' items.

So if you are looking for a piece of fine furniture made by Vitra for your living room that will give a spatial focus, and you can run to that extra cost, you will have an accent piece that will always grace your retro or modernist mix household theme. You can find much cheaper replicas of this iconic design available to buy elsewhere but you may not wish to compromise on build quality.

This vintage design is still much sought after today and demonstrates in its fluid curves the sculptural skills of the original artist. It is both timeless and will always be enduringly functional.
